Igmund agreed and Ulfric set out with a personal retinue that would cut bloody swathes through the Forsworn ranks and successfully siege out Markarth itself, with the surrender of the Forsworn turning into a bloodbath with Ulfric ordering the execution of any and all who did not make it clear they were loyal to the Kingdom of Skyrim. Returning focus to Skyrim during aforementioned conflict, Prince Igmund Hrolfdirson made a deal with the recently ascended Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak to restore Markarth to Nordic control in exchange for free worship of Talos within the Hold. Regardless, this effective defeat of the Aldmeri invasion of Hammerfell and the Mede Empire's failure to rein in their wayward vassal would set a dangerous precedent that would resonate for decades to come. Although their main response to this stipulation was to designate their former military forces as law enforcement to combat insurgency within the new territory. Hammerfell's war against the Dominion would end with the Second Treaty of Stros M'kai in 4E 180, effectively setting the borders to current lines of control and requiring the Aldmeri government to withdraw its military forces from Hammerfell entirely. This led to a further 9 years of conflict in the desert province, in which the city of Taneth and its immediate surroundings were captured by the Dominion and it became the bulwark upon which a bloody stalemate would be fought as naval efforts to capture surrounding islands proved futile in the face of fierce Redguard resistance under the leadership of King Jengo Khayrat and his Lhutonic Guard. Later in the year 4E 175 the Kingdom of Hammerfell refused to recognize the authority of the Emperor Titus II Mede and the terms of the recently-signed White-Gold Concordat with the Aldmeri Dominion following part of the treaty granting the Dominion all of Southern Hammerfell.
The changeover itself being mostly peaceful, virtually all Imperial forces having been withdrawn from the Hold to help with the war effort, with only Jarl Hrolfdir and a handfull of the harshest and biggest Nordic landowners being put to death. While the Reach had been a hotbed of unrest for quite some time, following reports from Cyrodiil of the Imperial City being sacked, and even false whispers that the Empire had been toppled entirely, a man self-proclaimed as "King Madanach I Blood-Wing" led an army of Reachmen to seize the city of Markarth. The time in Tamrielic history now referred to as the Cascade, Tamrielic Cascade, or sometimes as the Interwar Cascade began before the First Great War even ended, although some argue this was simply the continuation of longstanding civil strife following the assassination of Potentate Ocato in the year 4E 10, with the uprising of the Forsworn in 4E 174.
